On Friday October 15th the Goodbye Garbage™ team braved the rainy weather and set out to clean up the community of Squamish. We met at Coho Park, assembled our team and off we went! Venturing through out the town it did not take long before we were pulling over to load the truck. Unfortunately, the trails and easy access to nature that make Squamish famous are also common illegal dumping spots. Going a mere 50 feet into several different trails we were able to pull out a variety of items including multiple tires, shopping carts, electronics, plastic pipes, household garbage, sporting equipment and scrap metal. We got wet and dirty, we climbed down hillsides and even used rope to tow out pieces of a rusted-out car frame. Within 4 hours we had filled two full trucks totaling 1105 kilograms.
At Goodbye Garbage™ our mantra is always to keep garbage out of the landfill. First thing Monday morning we took the time to properly dispose of all items picked up. Tires were delivered to Canadian Tire, scrap building supplies were taken to Squamish Rebuild, metal recycled at ASM Scrap Metal the metal recycling will be donated to the Squamish Food Bank.
All in all we had a great day despite the weather! Our team felt accomplished and proud knowing we contributed to cleaning up Squamish.
